Biography

West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, in which delegates from some Unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to break away from Virginia during the American Civil War, although they included many secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state, the first to separate from any state since Maine separated from Massachusetts, and was one of two states formed during the American Civil War (the other being Nevada). This why Daniel Flint residence shows up as Virginia.

Second Marriage

Sometime between 1850[1] and 1860, Harriet Riggs married Daniel Flint.[2] Harriet died of dropsy on 28 Mar 1869 in Pleasants County, West Virginia.[3] Although no marriage record has been located, the inscription on the tombstone for Harriet Flint says she was the wife of D. Flint. In addition to the tombstone and the 1860 census showing Harriet living with Daniel Flint who was born in New Hampshire, that supports that this Daniel Flint was her husband, the below deed spells out their relationship when Daniel relinquishes his rights and title to her property.[4]

Deed/Proof of Marriage

As part of a court settlement, Daniel Flint, of Pleasants County, Virginia, made a deed in Pleasants County, Virginia on 13 April 1869 to James Riggs, Edmund Riggs, Jr., Ellen R. Riggs and Arthur P. Riggs "and heirs not yet present as yet" of Harriet Flint, decd.[5]

Slave Owner

Harriet's father left her two enslaved women.[6] The 1860 Census Slave Schedule of Daniel Flint also supports that Sally and Joana from the will of Bazel Riggs were still owned by Harriett Riggs Flint. The enslaved include one woman, aged 68, likely Sally, and one woman, aged 27, likely Joana.[7]

Slaves[8]

  1. Sall 'Sally' Roby
  2. Joana Riggs
