According to the "Genealogical Register of the Descendants of Thomas Flint, of Salem", compiled by John Flint and John H. Stone, brothers Thomas and William Flint, the emigrant ancestors came to America from Wales, (according to tradition--no documentation.) Other evidence shows the Flints may have come from Derbyshire in England. They are said to have arrived before 1640. William is first mentioned in Salem records in 1642 at which time there is some evidence to show that their mother was also living in this country. Hanson in "The History of Danvers" says that Willliam land here about 1640. Thus any children born prior to 1640 (including Alice) were born in the UK.
All of William's children married and lived in Salem except Elizabeth who married ___Woodis and resided in England. William's daughter Alice, married first Henry Bullock (abt 1654) and secondly, Lt. John Pickering. They became the ancestors of the numerous family distinguished for public services, and many descendants became prominent citizens.
Daughter Alice was arraigned before Essex Co Court in 1652 for wearing a silk hood, which was against the sumptuary laws of the time (clothing laws which made it illegal to wear certain finery including material with gold or silver threads, silk, etc unless your family was worth a certain amount. Alice proved she was worth ₤200 and the case discarded. She subsequently married John Pickering and lived in house on Broad Street, now standing (1860) and owned by her descendant.
The 23 May 1711 will of Alice Flint's brother, Edward Flint, bequeathed land to "my kinsman John Bullock" describing the land as "now in the hands of my sister Alice Pickering".[1]
Previously this profile assigned a death date of 5 Oct 1700 to Alice. That was the death date of her mother who's married name was "Flint". This Alice would have been buried as Alice Pickering. A probate case of 6 Jan 1723/24 for "Alice Pickering, relict widow of John Pickering, late of Salem" (she died intestate) is more likely correct.[2] Note that the "Pickering Family" document attached to this profile says she died in 1713 although it cites no source, so that is a possibility as well.
