Joseph Flipper was a former slave who rose to become a college president and eventually Senior Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.[1]

Joseph Flipper was born in 1859 into slavery. He was the son of Festus Flipper and Isabella Buckhalter.

One newspaper article tells part of the story of Bishop Joseph Simeon Flipper's life. He was born into slavery and his former owner was Ephraim G. Ponder. Joseph was born on the "Ponder Place". On some records of he and his siblings, he was listed as "B" for Black, and on others as "M" for Mulatto. Another tree lists his birth place as Thomasville, Thomas, Georgia. [2]
