Biography

Ireland Native
Catherine (Flood) Carbrey was born in Ireland.

Catherine was born in 1817 in Ireland, probably County Wicklow. She was the daughter of Henry Flood and Mary Ruddy.

Her parents settled in Maine in the 1820s. In 1840, Catherine was one of the two unnamed daughters of Henry Flood between ages 10-15, living in Jefferson, Maine as of the 1830 Census.[1] Catherine probably met her husband James Carbrey in Maine on one of his peddling trips. They married in Boston in 1835.

James and Catherine had the following children:

Sarah Carbrey, m. 1 William Cunningham, 2 Robert Hamilton
Hugh Carbrey, died in childhood
John Robert Carbrey, died in childhood
Mary Ann Carbrey, died in childhood
James Thomas Carbrey, m. Catherine Clinton
John Robert Francis Carbrey, (twin of Catherine) m. Catherine L. Brophy
Catherine Carbrey, (twin of John R.F.) m. 1. John Moore, 2. Michael Early
Hugh Perfectus Carbrey, died in infancy
Isabelle L. Carbrey, m. 1 William Brophy, 2. Thomas Hayes

In 1854, Catherine and James were part of a physical fight outside their home at Atkinson Street, Boston.

“Violent Assault. James Carbrey, trader at 63 Atkinson street, with his wife Catharine, were arraigned in the Police Court yesterday afternoon for a dangerous assault on Thomas Montgomery, who was knocked down, choked, and kicked. Examination postponed till 10th Inst., and defendants gave bail in $7000 for their appearance.” [2] Bail was later reduced to $800 and $200. [3] “Municipal Court. …. James Carbrey and Daniel Donnelly, convicted of a violent assault upon Thomas Montgomery – kicking him in the stomach &c.—were fined each $50 and a moiety of costs. Mrs. Carbrey was discharged. Montgomery has brought a suit in the Supreme Court for $15,000 damages for his injuries, which are very serious.”[4]
a comment: 1854 was the height of the Know-Nothing movement in Massachusetts [5]. It is possible that Thomas Montgomery shared in that anti-Roman Catholic sentiment. How did those bricks end up on the sidewalk? Daniel Donnelly appears to have been brought into the case late, to take the conviction instead of Catherine.

After the death of her husband in 1870, she continued to live in their house on South Street in Boston. [6] As of 1875, her son John and son-in-law William Brophy were also listed as living in the house.

Judging from the newspaper clippings, Catherine's life became very difficult after the death of her husband in 1870. The settlement of her husband's estate was protracted,

  • 1871: “Fell into an Open Hatchway. – While Mrs James Carberry, a widow, living at 26 South street, was coming up Rowe’s wharf about half-past 9 o’clock Tuesday evening, she walked into an open hatchway and injured herself quite severely. Her side, limbs, back and arms were bruised and it was thought two ribs were broken. She fell down about eleven feet upon a pile of stone. Officer Houghton procured a hack and sent her home.” [7]
  • April 1872: ‘’The Carbrey Family Fight .... while the hearing was going on before referees, Hugh Carbrey, not an heir to the estate, kept poking about the office, making himself very disagreeable. Finally he called Mrs. Carbrey some very hard names, using language not only unbecoming a gentleman, but even unbecoming a professional loafer. This angered John Carbrey who could not hear much [such?] talk about his mother and sister, a most beautiful lady, by the way. So in a short time John and Hugh came together, while blows were exchanged...." [8]
Dec 1872: Death of daughter Sarah Carbrey Cunningham Hamilton
Apr 1873: Death of son James Thomas Carbrey
Feb 1876: Death of daughter Catherine Carbrey Moore Early
  • Apr 1876: [Boston Municipal court] James Stevens, for breaking and entering the house of Mrs. James Carberry on South Street, was held in $1000 [9]

Catherine Flood Carbrey passed away in 1877 and is buried at Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline, Massachusetts, alongside her husband and some of her children.

In her will, Catherine left her estate, after some specific bequests, to the House of the Good Shepherd. The Sisters of the Good Shepherd [4] had opened the building in 1871[10] and they served “wayward girls,” unwed mothers and prostitutes, operating as part shelter and part reform school --and an alternative to prison.[11]

Will of Catherine (Flood) Carbrey
