Biography

Jacob Robert G. Florida was born about 1861.

He married Mary Delilah “Mollie” Lehew.

Jacob died in the Southern Railway wreck near McDonough Georgia on 23 June 1900 and was buried at Florida Cemetery in Norene, Wilson County, Tennessee. [1]

Who Lost His Life in Wreck Near Nashville.
The news of the terrible wreck on the Southern Railway at McDonugh, Ga., which will bring profound sorrow to many a household, fell with blighting effect on the home of J. R. Florida, the Nashville man who was included in the list of the dead, received over the wire by The American last night. Upon receipt of the message an American reporter located a friend of the family to inform them of the terrible fate of Mr. Florida. The residence is located on the Franklin turnpike, just beyond the reservoir. The home was reached about 10 o'clock, and it was found that the members of the family had retired for the night totally unconscious of the news that was to bring them so much sorrow. Andrew Patterson, a relative of Mrs. Florida, responded to the knock at the door. Mrs. Florida was a wakened, and when she appeared the shocking news with the dreadful details eliminated was conveyed to her a tenderly as was possible. She have way to paroxysms of grief. Some of the neighbors who were notified of the affair, came in to console the grief stricken woman. When Mrs. Florida had partially recovered form the firs shock of the sad intelligence, she stated that she received a letter yesterday morning from her husband at Chattanooga, and he stated that he would go to McDonough, the place near which the accident occurred. He was expected home Wednesday. P. B. Florida, a brother of the deceased, who resides at 619 South Cherry street, was next informed of the report, and the railway authorities were communicated with at once with a view of bringing the body to the city. Mr. Florida is well known in Nashville, and has a wide acquaintance throughout the South. He was a subscription book publisher, and had headquarters at the Southern Methodist Publishing House. a goodly portion of his time was spent on the road, and he had representatives at many points in the Southern territory. Mr. Florida was 39 years of age, and a native of Wilson County. He was engaged in business for awhile at Gainsville, south of Lebanon, but came to Nashville thirteen years ago and commenced the publication of books, and had succeeded in building up an extensive business. His wife was a Miss Lehew, of Wilson County, and the couple were marred shortly before Mr. Florida came to Nashville. They have two children, on a son 9 years of age and the other is a daughter who is not quite 2 years of age. Mr. Florida was a member of Smiley Lodge No. 90 and Nashville Encampment No.1, I.O.O.F., and a devout member of the Centennial Baptist Church.
