Origins

There is a lengthy G2G post concerning William Scott Flower's parentage and early years.

Here is the theory Janis Douglass and I came up with: His father was likely William Flower. This William Flower seems to have first married Rhoda Edgett,[1] who is very likely the mother of William Scott. Rhoda died on March 28, 1848.[2] Based on 1850[3] and 1860[4] Census records, it seems William Scott was born in early 1848 or perhaps late 1847. Interestingly, just a few months after Rhoda died, William married Rhoda's niece Phoebe Edgett on June 24, 1848.[5][6] Then, to complicate things even more, William (the likely father of William Scott) died in April 1850 aged 26![7] If the theory is correct, young William Scott grew up in the home of his step-mother's parents.

Summary of theory

Birthdate: late 1847 or early 1848. (Unless both the 1850 and 1860 Censuses had his birth year wrong or somehow the Scott Flower listed in those records isn't him.)
Birthplace: Romeo, Michigan
Father: William Flower
Mother: Rhoda Edgett
Step-mother: Phoebe Edgett

Reasons to doubt the theory

1. Confusion surrounding date of birth
The "Scott Flower" in Bruce, MI, in the 1850 and 1860 records, has a birth year of 1847 or 1848, which conflicts with William Scott Flower's fairly well accepted birth date of February 15, 1846. Everybody thought his birthday was February 15, 1846. Where could that notion have originated if it was false? Several records, including William Scott's tombstone, say 1846.[8][9][10] However, none of these are early records.
2. Family tradition and multiple records indicate German heritage
Flower family tradition and three census records state that William Scott Flower had German heritage.[11][12][13]
3. William Scott claimed to have lived in Iowa since 1861.[14] It seems a bit less probable that a 13- or 14-year-old would have traveled from Michigan to Iowa (apparently alone) than a 15- or 16-year-old.

Reasons that support the theory

1. The theory is fairly straightforward. Janis and I arrived at several of our conclusions independently.
2. A genealogist on FamilySearch pieced together several of the pieces of the story the same way we did.[15]
3. There isn't another good explanation for who his parents were. (They were definitely not Daniel and Harriet Flower!)
4. The only known record claiming to list William's parents lists a William Flower born in New York and a Rhoda Lagan born in New York who married that William in Michigan.[16] This is very close to our theory!
5. None of the records that conflict with the theory are rock solid proof. All of them conflict with other records.
6. There are records that list William Scott's birth year as "about 1847." This fits with the theory.[17][18][19]
7. There are records that list William Scott's birth year as "about 1848." These also fit with the theory.[20][21]
8. Though some censuses list his parents' birthplaces as Germany, other records indicate New York and/or United States. [22][23] (Obviously these records fit with the theory.)
9. William Scott probably didn't know that much about his parents if they both died before he was 3! The conflicting records and myths passed down for generations make a little more sense if his parents really did die when he was very young.
10. It's possible William Scott made up the earlier birth date to be able to enlist in the Union Army! (You never know!) At any rate, if you compare all of his census records, the math just doesn't add up. His age fluctuates. This supports the idea that the birth date of February 15, 1846, is anything but set in stone.

Bio by Donna Lawrence

Civil War service:
Enlisted: 1 Oct 1864, Dubuque, IA
Mustered out: 15 Sep 1865, Davenport, IA

William's "parents came from Germany (where the name was probably Blume or Blumer) to New York. Moved to [Romeo], Michigan. Had six sisters. (?) Enlisted in the Union army in 1863 at the age of 16. Was attached to the 31st Iowa Infantry of the Army of the Tennessee; fought with General Grant, in the Battles at Chattanooga; and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. He was struck by a bullet once, but it only knocked him down. Married in 1875. Had 3 sons and 3 daughters. Moved to Eagle Grove in 1888. Worked as a machinist and a blacksmith. In retirement, was a fireman (?) for the public library. Buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery."[24]

Revised Biography

William Scott Flower was born in Romeo, Bruce Township, Michigan.[25][26] Some claim he was born on February 15, 1846, but his actual birth date was probably late 1847 or early 1848. He was probably the son of William Flower and Rhoda Edgett. Rhoda died March 28, 1848. William remarried to Rhoda's niece Phoebe on June 24, 1848. William Sr. died in April 1850. The child we believe to be William Scott Flower is listed in the 1850 Census in Bruce, Michigan, as "Scott Flower." At that time, Scott is living with Phoebe (Edgett) Flower and her family.[27] In 1860, "Scott Flowers" is still living with Phoebe's parents. Phoebe herself has moved out.[28] In 1905, William Scott claimed to have lived in Iowa for 44 years.[29] This would put his move to Iowa around 1861. Since William Scott wasn't particularly good at getting details straight, it's hard to know if this is right.

One record states that William Scott enlisted in the Union Army on October 17, 1864 and was mustered out July 25, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky.[30] It is fairly certain that he served in the 17th Iowa Infantry.[31]

William Scott married Mary Nelson on March 7, 1875.[32][33][34]

In 1880, William and Mary were living in Lafayette, Iowa and had three children, Rhoda, Julia, and William.[35] In 1885, they were living in Lafayette and had added a child, Myrtie.[36] By 1895, they had moved to Wright County and had added Paul and Walter to the family.[37] In 1900, William and Mary were living with Paul and Walter in Eagle Grove.[38] William Scott lived in Eagle Grove for a long time.[39][40][41] In 1925, he and Mary show up in a Clarion, Wright County census record.[42]

William Scott Flower passed away on January 5, 1930.[43][44][45] He was in his eighties.

His death certificate was completed by Walter Flower, which would almost certainly be his son. The certificate lists William's parents' names and birthplaces as "unknown." This seems surprising. This would seem to imply that either William did not know the names of his own parents or that he never told his children what their names were. The cause of death is listed as myocarditis.[46]

Obituary

"William Scott Flower was born on Feb. 15, 1846 in Romeo, Mich., where he lived until he was 17 years of age and then moved to Dyersville, Iowa.

The Civil war was being waged at this time. In 1863 he enlisted in the army and was attached to the 31st Iowa infantry of The Army of the Tennessee. Although but a mere boy, he saw some very active service. He served under Gen. Grant for a time. He was in the battles at Chattanooga. He was with Gen. Sherman in his march to the sea. When the war was over he was in the great review in Washington where he was mustered out. He was never wounded but a bullet struck the great buckle that the soldiers wore and he was knocked down. The buckle undoubtedly saved his life.

After his discharge he returned to Story county, Iowa, where he began work in a grist mill.

On March 8, 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Nelson. They moved to Excellisor in Mahaska county, Iowa, where he took charge of the water works for the C. & N. W. R. R. Co.

They moved to Eagle Grove 41 years ago when Mr. Flower started to work as a machinist for the C. & N. W. He quit this business and started a dray line. The last position that he held before retiring from work was that of janitor at the library.

The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Flower: Mrs. Rhoda H. Waddell, Mrs. Julia Mead, Will J. all of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Myrtle Opheim of Thor, Paul and Walter S. of Eagle Grove.

Mr. Flower was converted in the Lowery meetings and united with the Methodist church in 1908 during the pastorate of Rev. C. E. Chapier. He has been a faithful Christian and a regular attendant at church and Sunday school up until the time of his death. He was a familiar figure on the streets of Eagle Grove. He will be missed much because of his regularity in his habits of life. He was kind and loving to his wife of many years, who will miss him more than anyone else. He had, it seemed, a greater interest in the welfare of his family than the most of aged people. They had their family gatherings which were attended and enjoyed by them all.

Mr. Flower was a member of the G. A. R. Post No. 465. He was the last of the "old soldiers" to be seen walking our streets. Decoration day always found him on the streets and in the parade. Some very interesting and beautiful things are remembered of him in connection with those beautiful services for the Civil war veterans which time and space prevents us from telling here. For eight years he was chairman of the Wright County Pension association.

He passed away after a very brief illness at 1:20 a. m., Jan. 5, 1930, at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 20 days. He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife and family already mentioned, and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the M. E. church on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1930. W. G. Muhleman preached the sermon from the text found in 2nd Tim. 4:6. Mr. Flower was given a military funeral. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery."
