Dr A E Floyd was the son of a Wesleyan Methodist Minister, the Rev Charles H Floyd and his wife Annie. Alfred attended a boys' school in Cambridgeshire, and later taught music at a school in Wales. In 1915 he took the position of organist at St Pauls Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia, and continued in that role for 32 years. He composed for organ, and was also well-known and highly regarded as a broadcaster, introducing his listeners to a deep appreciation of good music. He was frequently in demand as an adjudicator at eisteddfods and other music competitions. His wife's name was Frances Mary Griffiths, who was about 11 years younger than Alfred. They were married in Oswestry, Shropshire in January 1913.
