Kiziah "Kizzie" Rebecca Floyd was (presumably) born on February 24th, 1860 in Tennessee to Thomas Anderson Floyd and Matilda Jackson. [1] [2]

Her parents purchased a small farm in the 4th Civil District of Marion County, Tennessee near her mother's parents' land in the 1860s. [3] They eventually moved to a farm in The Pocket atop the Cumberland Mountain on the western ridge of the Sequatchie Valley. The land was situated in the 2nd Civil District in Marion County until redistricting around the turn of the century. [4]

She married Shadrick C. Green around 1886, and settled on a farm next to her parents in The Pocket. By 1900 they had seven children. The oldest child, George, worked as a farm laborer by the age of 13 to supplement the income Shadrick brought in from the coal mines. [5] By 1910 Shadrick had left the coal mines for work as a carpenter, and Kizzie's sister Elizabeth was living with the family. [6] Elizabeth continued to live with the family over the next decade and pulled her weight by working as a laundress. [7]

Kizzie died from pneumonia on April 5th, 1922 in Whitwell and was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery the following day. [1]

Research Notes

  • Birthdate - Rebecca's age was listed as 2/12 months in the 1860 Census, which was taken in June, suggesting a birthdate around April 1860. Her son, Walter, listed her birthdate as 24 February 1860 on her death certificate in 1922. The 1860 Census enumerator may have wrote her month of birth rather than age at time of census. The 1870 Census lists Rebecca as only four years old, suggesting a birth date of 1866. While it is possible that Thomas and Matilda had two daughters named Rebecca, it is more likely that the ages were underestimated in the 1870 Census.
  • 1900 Census - The page is torn in the section where Kiziah's name was listed, but her identity is confirmed by the names of her children on the following page.
