Biography

The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.
This profile is part of the Floyd Name Study.
Thomas Floyd was a South Carolinian.

Thomas Floyd was born on June 14th, 1805 in South Carolina. [1] He married a woman named Nancy about 1825, probably in South Carolina where their daughter Elizabeth was born. During the late 1820s the Floyds migrated to Tennessee, where their daughter Melinda was born about 1829. [2]

By 1830 the Floyds settled in Marion County, Tennessee and were enumerated on the same page as a similarly-aged William Floyd in the 1830 Census. A 23-person household headed by Enoch Floyd was enumerated a few pages after William and Thomas. In addition to Thomas and Nancy's two daughters, a boy between 5 and 10 years old lived with the family. This presumed child has not been identified. [3] The Floyds were enumerated in Marion County in 1840 directly above a similarly-aged David Floyd. [4]

He died on December 19th, 1859 and is buried in Cheekville Cemetery in Whitwell, Tennessee. [1]

Research Notes

  • Uncertain Family - Thomas' proximity to William and David Floyd in the 1830 and 1840 Censuses, respectively, combined with their similarities in age, suggest a fraternal relationship. Similar naming patterns corroborate this circumstantial evidence (e.g., sons named Anderson). Enoch Floyd is at least 20 years older than these men and is a potential patriarch.
  • Birthdate - The date of birth on Thomas' headstone is illegible, but calculating from the date and age of death infers a date of birth of 14 June 1805.
  • Headstone Inscription - In Memory of Thomas Floyd, Bornd: June the ? 1805 Died: Decemb The 19th 1859 Age: 50Y 6M 6D : Member of the Curmbline Church.

  • Potential Records -
    • A Thomas Floyd witnessed an 1838 Marion County deed between Charles Overstreet and Daneil Connatser.[7]
    • On 04 July 1842 Thomas Floyd was appointed overseer on the stage road in place of John Ross from Mrs. Smith's to the lower boundary of John Ross'.[8] James Hawkins replaced Thomas Floyd as overseer in 1843.[9]
    • In 1845 Thomas and David C. Floyd were among the men ordered to to work the public road from the top of the hill near J. H. Conatser to a cherry tree on the stage road near John Pryor's.[10]
  • Common Claims - Many family trees show Thomas Floyd's wife as Nancy Reynolds. This is presumably based on the fact that a Thomas Floyd married Nancy Reynolds in Hardeman County, Tennessee in 1840.[11] Note that there were two Thomas Floyds enumerated in Hardeman County in the 1840 Census, one of which likely pertains to the husband of Nancy Reynolds.[12] These records do not pertain to the Thomas Floyd represented by this profile who was enumerated in Marion County, Tennessee in the same census.[4]
