His father was a sharecropper and he grew up in poverty in Kentucky, USA. In 1951 his sister Judy died at age 4 of leukemia. The death provoked his parents' divorce one year later. He and his mother moved to Indiana, USA while his brother was raised by his maternal grandmother in Magoffin County.

He ran away from home and, despite being only 15 years old, joined the United States Army using a counterfeit birth certificate. He was honorably discharged in 1959 and returned to Indiana, USA.

In July 1960 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a radarman 2nd class USN on the USS Enterprise, operating with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. He was the operator on duty when the ship was assigned to recover John Glenn's space capsule. Larry was honorably discharged in July 1964.

In early 1965 he took $1,800 from his savings and bought his mother's "Keewee" bar in Dayton, Ohio, USA. He refitted it and was soon making $1,000 a week; he used the profits to buy two other bars. He worked as many as 20 hours a day and took amphetamines to stay awake. He frequently had to break up fistfights between drunken customers.

In 1968 he and his brother opened a new, higher-class bar, the "Hustler Club", which was the first in the in Dayton, Ohio area to feature nude hostess dancers. By 1973 he had published a newsletter, growing into a series of strip clubs throughout the state.

He was widely known as the millionaire publisher of "Hustler" magazine which supported libertarian views.

In 1977 he converted to evangelical Christianity at the behest of a former U.S. President's sister.

On 06 March 1978 he and his lawyer were shot on a courthouse sidewalk in Lawrenceville, Georgia, USA. The shooting left him paralyzed from the waist down. After the shooting he abandoned his religious conversion and was limited to a $ 17,000 gold-plated wheelchair for the rest of his life. His troubles continued up through the years from surgeries and drug abuse.

His life was the basis of the 1996 movie “Larry Flint” starring Woody Harrelson, partly based on a proceeding in the U.S. Supreme Court.
