Biography

Willem Fockens married 1 Fennichjen. Fennigjen was buried Oct 1 1690 in Anloo.

Willem Fockens married 2 Hindrikjen Roelfs. Children: Jantjen (Feb 27 1698), Albertjen (Dec 24 1702), Fokke (1705), Roelof (1715).

Willem also buried Lucas Lamberts of Eext on Dec 21 1690. He is listed as the person who owned the house of mourning (sterfhuis).

Willem lived in Eext. In the Haardstedengeld in 1692 and 1693 there he paid 2 guilders. He is called Willem Vockens in the 1692 record. In the 1691 record, in which he also paid 2 guilders, it says Willem Fockes owned 2 horses and that he butchered animals (doet het slachten) yearly in Groningen and whenever necessary at home. Thus he was a butcher (slachter).

Since their (likely) younger children have no baptism records, it's possible Willem and Hindrikjen moved elsewhere after 1702. Their daughter Jantjen was living in Zuidveen by Steenwijk when she first married in 1723 - it's very possible they moved there to join the Mennonite community. Jantjen joined the Mennonite community in Giethoorn when she married; Fokke joined the Reformed Church.

It took a lot to track Willem's family down. Wallinga would be a Frisian name. It appears with Willem Roelofs Wallinga marrying in Sneek in 1776 and daughters of a Fokke Wallinga having children in the Haskerland area in the 1770's. It turns out they were cousins. There was also a Hendrik Martens Wallinga who baptized a son Hessel in 1693 in Dongjum, and Hessel's family is recorded several times over the next century. Since Hendrik Wallinga was a school teacher, and there were several teachers in our Wallinga family as well, his father Marten may have been a brother to our Fokke. [1]
