Her hospitality was proverbial, and gained for her the name "Queen of the Wade".
In 1859 the New Zealander, of 28 September 1859, Page 6, Notes:
"This is a claim under pre-emption certificate No 129 dated 14th January 1845, for 800 acres in favor of John Fair, who was afterwards drowned. On the application of the widow, Mary Fair, Governor Fitzroy consented to the certificate being made out in the name of the widow and her eldest son, jointly, for 800 acres."[1]
She married 1ly in Ireland, John Fair, and the family immigrated to New Zealand.
They had issue at least four children. Her husband was drowned in Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, in 1845.
She married 2ly Maurice Kelly, with issue five children.
She died on 31 October 1884. Her widower died in 1888, reportedly aged 104.
