Sussex (historic flag, adopted 2011)
Thomas Fogden was born in Boxgrove, Sussex, England.

Thomas Fogden was born on 21 October 1703 and christened on 2 November 1703 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England [1][2]. He was the second child of Thomas Fogden and Mary Purdy[1]. He had an elder brother William [3]. Only a month after he was born a category 2 hurricane hit Britain causing extensive damage and great loss of life [4].

In 1705, when he was 2 his second brother John was born [5] and in 1709 when he was 6 a third brother Henry was born [6]. On August 12, 1712, when he was 8, his brother Robert was born in Boxgrove [7] and baptised on 31 August 1712.[8]. in 1716 when he was 13 his first sister was born [9] and in 1720 when he was 17 his youngest brother was born [10].

Aged 32, he married Ann Batemen on September 20, 1735 at Amberley, Sussex, England [11]. Just two days later Sir Eobert Walpole became the first British Prime Minister to occupy 10 Downing Street [12]. Together they had three children:

  1. Ann Fogden (bef.1736-) [13],
  2. Alexander Fogden (bef.1737-bef.1810) [14],
  3. Sarah Fogden (bef.1742-) [15].

The next year, 1736, their first child, a daughter Ann was born [16]. The following year, 1737, their first son Alexander was born who went on to have a large family [17]. There was then a gap of a few years and in 1742 their third child, a daughter Sarah was born [18].

On October 26th 1758 his son Alexander married Sarah Martin [19]. The marriage, by license, was witnessed by Thomas's brother John so we have no proof that Thomas and Ann were present at the wedding, though barring illness this was likely as he would only be 55 at the time and having no evidence that Ann or Sarah married this could be the first wedding in the family. The next year, 1759, Sarah Martin delivered his first grandchild [20].

He died on ... in ... [21].

Research note

There are several burial records for Thomas Fogden in Boxgrove. There are two with a birth date 1 year out (always possible when working with just years as dates). There are others with no birth dates. The entry for him at My Heritage, ([2] scroll down to 1703 - 1781), indicates the 1781 record may be correct but it is behind a paywall.
