Biography

On 15 November 1850, William lived with his mother and brother in Pope County, Arkansas. They lived next to Sarah's father.[1]

William was born in 1848, based on the 1850 Census. He told the Army that he was 17 when he enlisted in Company D of the 3rd Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry to fight for the Union in the Civil War on 30 October 1863. He signed his enlistment document with an X, suggesting he could not write his name. He was described in his enlistment records as being 5 ft tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and fark hair. He was a farmer, born in Yell County, Arkansas. he mustered in on 7 November 1863 at Little Rock, bringing his own horse. In March 1864 he served as an orderly at the Regimental Headquarters. He was mustered out on 30 June 1865 at Lewisburg, Arkansas, He returned a pistol and was due money for a sling and swivel, nose bag, and a halter he had provided ($5.40).[3][4]

After the war, he came home and William married Almedy Vick on 1 January 1868 in Pope, Arkansas, United States.[5]

On 21 July 1870, the Foley family lived in Galla Rock Township in Pope County, Arkansas. They owned $40 in personal estate.[6]

On 27 April 1875, William apparently died in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas.[3]
