Biography

Susanna was born in Salem Twp., Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony on 1 Jun 1662.[1] She is the third born child and second daughter of Robert Follett and Persis Black. She married first, Joseph Sibley in Salem Twp. on 4 Feb 1684.[2] They had seven (known) children together: 1) Joseph (Jr.) b. in Salem Twp. on 9 Nov 1684; 2) John b. in Salem Twp. on 18 Sep 1687; 3) Jonathan b. in Salem Twp. on 1 May 1690 (date given in Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire); christening in First Church of Salem Twp. in May 1690; 4) Hannah b. (date unk); christening (prb.) in First Church of Salem Twp. in May 1695; 5) Samuel b. in Salem Twp. on 6 May 1697; 6) William b. in Salem Twp. on 7 Sep 1700 (date given in Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire); 7) Benjamin b. 19 Sep 1703 (date given in Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire); christening (prb.) in First Church of Salem Twp. on 19 Sep 1703.

After the death of her husband, Joseph on 25 Apr 1718, Susanna married second, Isaac Howe, son of John Howe and Mary ____, in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay on 2 Dec 1718.[3] There are no (known) children from this marriage. She is named in Isaac How's will, made on 21 Jun 1723.[4]

Susanna is "said to died in Marlborough in 1757,"[citation needed] but Helen Schatvet Ullmann in her 2006 Sibley genealogy says that she had probably died by 25 Apr 1729, when her children "engaged in a series of land transfers."[5] The last record found of Susanna (Follett) (Sibley) Howe is on 20 April 1725, when she presented an account for her second husband's estate.[4]

Information found in the book by Joseph B. Felt entitled ANNALS OF SALEM, vol. 2, pp. 214-215, at Hackley Public Library, Muskegon, Mich.:

"1693. Joseph Sibley, George Harvey, aged 46, and Henry Harvey, 43, on their homeward passage from a fishing voyage to Cape Sable, were impressed on board of a British frigate. After seven weeks' service in this vessel, the captain forced Sibley to go on board of another ship. Susannah, wife of the latter, having four children, petitions the Governor to redress the wrongs of her husband."

By whom is she "said to have died in Marlborough in 1757"? Helen Schatvet Ullmann, FASG, in "Some Descendants of John Sibley of Salem, Massachusetts" (Boston, 2006) at page 13 says that she probably had died "shortly before 25 Apr 1729 when her children ... engaged in a series of land transfers."

Her son William was baptised on 7 April 1700 (Vital Records of Salem Massachusetts, http://ma-vitalrecords.org) so could not have been born on 7 September 1700.
