Biography

Caleb Foote, the only child of Caleb Foote and Martha West, was born on 28 February 1803 in Salem, Massachusetts. ^{[1] [2] [3] [4]}

His father died when Foote was nine and his mother died shortly thereafter as well. ^[5] Leaving school at the age of 10 and working in an uncle's grocers and, later, Henry Whipple and Samuel West's bookshops. ^[5]

Family

He married Mary White in Salem, Massachusetts on 21 October 1835. ^{[3] [6] [7] [8]}

Occupation

Foote was a publisher. ^[4]

At the death of his wife, Foote developed a 'meager friendship' with Nathaniel Hawthorne. ^[9]

Death

Foote died in Salem on 17 June 1894. ^{[4] [10]}
