Biography

Arthur Forbes was the son and heir of Sir Arthur Forbes, Bt., (created 26th Sept 1628) who had received large grants of land in counties Longford and Leitrim which were erected into the feudal manor of Castle Forbes. He succeeded his father on 14th April 1632 being then aged nine years.

He was later in command in Scotland for the Royalist cause, and upon the restoration was made a Commissioner of the Court of Claims (Ireland) in 1661. From 1661 to 1666 he was Member of Parliament in 1661 for Mullingar and for St. Johnstown, co.Longford, and subsequently for county Tyrone. He was Marshal of the Army in Ireland 1670-1684, and a Lord Justice in Ireland in 1671, 1675-76 and 1684-5. He was created 22nd November 1675, Baron Clanehugh and Viscount of Granard, co.Longford (in the Peerage of Ireland), and subsequently on 30th December 1684, Earl of Granard (Ireland)

In 1683 he was accused of being involved in the Rye House Plot but was able to extricate himself satisfatorily. In 1684-86 he was Colonel of the 18th Foot Regiment (Ireland) and subsequently Lieutenant-general in the Army, resigning office under King James II, whose Parliament in Ireland he attended in May 1689. In 1661 and again in 1686 he was a Privy Councillor. He was reappointed PC 6 November by King William III and took his seat in Parliament 20th October 1692.

He was buried at Newtown Forbes. His Will was not proved (in Ireland) until 1698.[1]

In 2017 his descendant, the Earl of Granard, lived on the Isle of Man.
