Biography

William was born in 1578. He is the son of William Forbes and Margaret Douglas.

Sir William Forbes, the eldest son, succeeded before 1618, when he had a charter of Portlethen, and another of the barony of Torry, both in Kincardineshire, in favour of himself and Elizabeth Wishart of Pitarrow, his wife. He was created a Knight Baronet of Scotland and Nova Scotia in 1626, by Charles I. His eldest daughter, Jean, married the parson of Monymusk, Mr. Alexander Lunan, who removed to Kintore in 1628. I. 1626. William Forbes, of Monymusk, co. Aberdeen, s. and h. of William Forbes, of the same, by Margaret, da. of William (Douglas), Earl of Angus [S.], suc. his father between 1608 and 1618, and was cr. a Baronet [S.] as " of Monymusk," 30 March, sealed 2 May 1626,(a) with rem. to heirs male whatsoever, and with a grant of, presumably, 16,000 acres in Nova Scotia, called the Barony of Forbes, of which he had seizin in the said month of May 1626 (b) He m. Elizabeth, da. of ( — ) Wishart, of Pittarrow. He d. before July 1661.
III. Williarn , his eldest son, married Elizebeth 'Wishart of Pitarrow . He bought land in Kincardineshire, including Portlethen and Banchory, ,rnd was a hoyalist sympathiser in the early troubles, being created a baronet by Charles I., April 2nd, 1626, among the earliest in Scotland. Besides, William, his heir, be had two other sons, Robert of Barnes,3 and Alexander of Abersnithack, and three daughters-Jean, married Alexander Lunan, minister of the parish ; Elizabeth or Isobel, married John Forbes of Asloun ; and Anne, died unmarried.
