90TH BIRTHDAY NOTICE: "Mrs. Francis Stevens celebrated her ninetieth birthday last Wednesday lying in bed at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. R. Brindle, Grafton. Mrs. Stevens was surrounded by many of her descendants, and, but for an accident a few weeks ago when she fell and broke her shoulder, she would have been mixing with her well wishers. Born at East Maitland in 1842, Mrs. Stevens was one of a family of 15 and went to the Clarence River with her late husband, Mr. Charles Stevens, about 62 years ago. They carried on farming first about 2½ miles from Grafton and afterwards at Carr's Creek and Great Marlow before sett ling in Grafton. FAMILY OF FOURTEEN Mrs. Stevens had a family of 14 children, 12 of whom are living. In addition to her six sons and six daughters, Mrs. Stevens has 50 grand children, and 65 great-grandchildren. The family comprises: Thomas, James, Charles, Percy and Alpheus (all of Grafton), Albert (Lismore), Mesdames R. Barnier, E. Wicks, W. J. Wunder lich, R. Brindle (Grafton), R. Lett and E. Hart (Sydney). Mrs Stevens retains all her mental faculties despite her age. Afternoon tea was served at the birthday cele brations and the Rev. D. C. Harper (Baptist) spoke of Mrs. Stevens's sterling qualities, saying that her knowledge of the Scriptures surpassed that of many of the younger generation."[2]

DEATH NOTICE: "OBITUARY MRS. FRANCES STEVENS The death occurred at the residence her daughter, Mrs. R. Brindle, Villiers Street, Grafton, on Thursday, of Mrs. Frances Stevens, widow of the late Charles Stevens. The deceased lady, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, was a native of Maitland, and went to the Clarence in 1870. Mrs. Stevens could recount many of the hardships of the old pioneering days when means of transit and other conditions were far from what they are today. She leaves the following sons: Thomas, James, Charles, Percy, Alpheus (Grafton), and Albert (Lismore); and daughters, Mesdames R. Barnier, E. Wicks, W. J. Wunderlich, and R. Brindle 'Grafton,) R. Lett and E. Hart (Sydney). Despite her great age, Mrs. Stevens retained all her faculties to the last, and was conscious till within a few minutes of the end, which was accentuated by an accident a few weeks ago, as a result of which she broke a shoulder."[3]
