Dick (John Richard) and Minnie owned a fish shop in Sandringham, although Dick continued to work as a conductor on the trams. Minnie used to cook Fish and chips for Dick's lunch and also for Evelyn and Len at school. When Dick tram passed the fish shop he would collect the 3 parcels then make an unofficial stop at the school to hand over the parcels to the children.
Minnie died on October 8 1962 while living with her daughter Evelyn at Holgate Road, Kohimarama in Auckland. Minnie had a small operation on her bladder and on 8th October 1962 she collapsed and died in the kitchen. Minnie and the next door neighbour used to have a race to hang out the washing. The neighbour noticed that minnie's washing was not on the line at 11am. She went into the house and found her dead.[2]
