He left Perth in March 1901 as a Lieutenant to serve in South Africa during the Boer War. He was shot and killed along with five others during action at Grobelaar Recht, Transvaal while fighting with the 5th Western Australia Mounted Infantry.[2] The Geraldton Advertiser article incorrectly lists the date of the action as 19th May 1901.[3][4][5]
