Biography

Solomon Aaron Forrester was born in the woods of Hickman County on Sugar Creek. A book could be written of all the stories he related about his early years in a large Scott-Irish family. It was a family tradition to work hard during the week, but weekends were utilized for a large family & neighbor gathering with music, dancing, drink, feasting, & fighting. He once said that if he & his brothers had no one else to fight that they would "fight each other" for the fun of it. His family was of modest means and he began his career in "logging" & working in the woods (i.e. that's a Forrester for sure). It was during this time as a laborer in the woods on my grandmother's father's land that the two met & he stole her heart away from a senator's son that she was "arranged" to marry. This resulted in their elopement on the back of a mule. I have seen many census sheets that list his occupation as "farmer", but that was somewhat of a stretch. He didn't have to make money because he married it. A man of strong character, he was an enthusiast in all his endeavors, especially politics and was a friend to all and well respected in the community. It was a common occurrence that his siblings would drive from where-ever they lived to visit with us. He took in orphaned cousins and was generous to a fault. In his latter years he began to suffer from the effects of hypertension which eventually led to a cardiac event and he died while hospitalized in Waverly, TN. He was laid to rest on the family farm which has a family cemetery that was opened to the public & known as "Taylor Town Cemetery" (my grandmother's family's cemetery).
