Regiment(s): 2nd Iowa Cavalry, Co. B

Henry Bascom Forrey was born in Ohio. He moved to Indiana as an infant, then Iowa with his parents. Henry served in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry, Co. B during the Civil War. He was in the seige and battle of Corinth, and battles of Iuka and Nashville. He had his horse shot out from under him by a cannonball during the Farmington Charge, which just grazed his knee. He was also in the battles of New Madrid and Island No. 10. The area they marched throught was swampy, and many soldiers died of thyphoid and other such diseases, from contaminated water. He avoided water-borne diseases, because he didn't like the look of the muddy river water they drank, so he would boil it and make coffee, to cover up the brown color. "A total of 2053 men served in the 2nd Iowa at one time or another during its existence. It suffered 1 officer and 59 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 8 officers and 207 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 275 fatalities"--Wikipedia After the war, he married Julia Ann Read. They lived with her parents for a number of years. Their first 3 children were born in the Read home. Around 1873, they moved to Kansas, where they bought a farm: the NE quarter of section 22, Harrison twp., Jewell co. They had a total of 9 children. They moved to Lincoln, KS, around 1906 or so, so that the younger children could go to college at Kansas Christian College. In 1890, he filed for his civil war pension as an invalid. In 1908, his wife filed as his widow. Henry died of skin cancer.
