Biography

Gasua Chapman Fortenberry was born: 16 July 1805 in Lancaster, SC, and died: 21 June 1883 in Pike County, MS. He was 79 when he died.

He married Sarah Brown born: 05 Feb 1810 in Liberty, Georgia, they were married: 11 Oct 1832 in Marion County, MS(?), she died: 19 July 1883 in Pike County MS. She was 73.

Gasua served under Col. Peter Quin[1] in the 9th Mississippi Regiment. Peter Quin, Jr., was a colonel in the Ninth Regiment, United States Militia, from 1825 to 1827. He served two terms in the state legislature from 1825-28 and was the first probate judge of Pike County. Quin died on August 25, 1835, from injuries received in a duel. He was 48.

Gasua was a member of the Sons of Temperance. This was an organization that opposed the drinking of alcoholic beverages. In the "Constitution of the Order of the Sons of Temperance" (New York: Oliver and Brothers Printers, 1848) the explanation is given of the different ranks and their symbols of this organization. In one picture taken of Gasua, he is wearing the insignia of a scribe, and in another he appears wearing the rank of the highest office, that of Most Worthy Patriarch. He was a founding member of Silver Creek Baptist Church
