Biography
Richard FORTESCUE of Filleigh53 was born in 1517. He died in 1570. Richard inherited the estates at Wear-Gifford, Combe, and elsewhere. He died on 30th June 1570 and is buried at the church in Filleigh. A brass in the church is to his memory. Parents: Bartholomew FORTESCUE of Filleigh and Ellen MOORE of Moor Hayes in Cullompton. Spouse: Joan MORETON of Kent. Children were: Hugh FORTESCUE of Wear-Gifford, George FORTESCUE of Combe in Holbeton, Mary FORTESCUE of Filleigh, Elizabeth FORTESCUE.
- Richard Fortescue, eldest son and heir of Bartholomew Fortescue, Esq. (d. 1557), lord of the manor of Filleigh and of several other manors, by his wife Ellen More (or Moore), was a Member of Parliament in 1545, a Justice of the Peace for Devon by 1558, and Sheriff of Devon by 1562. [1] "He married about 1544 Joan Morton, daughter of Robert Morton, by Dorothy, daughter of Sir John Fitz James, of Redlynch (in Bruton), Somerset," [2]
