James was born in 1810. James Fortner [1]

1850 US Census (Slave Schedule) [2] A James Fortner is resident in Lowndes County, Alabama and owns one male slave Born in 1825, and 25 years old. [3]

1855 State Census[4] - A "Jas Fortner" is shown as Resident in Lowndes County Alabama and head of the household. There are 9 inhabitants in the household. There is one male and one female over the age of 21. There are 3 males under the age of 21 and 4 females under the age of 21 for a total of 2 adults and 7 children. Of the 7 children, 4 are between the ages of 8 and 16. There are no slaves or free people of color. [5]

1868-1869 - James was Sheriff of Connecuh County following the Civil War. [6][7]
