Summons Comes to H. P. Foskett
Veteran Soldier and Medina Citizen Dies at Age of 84 Years.
Led Industrious Life and Had Prospered
In Failing Heath, End Was Hastened by Recent Attack of Bronchial Pneumonia
H. P. Foskett, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Medina village, and for nearly eighty years a resident of this vicinity, on Sunday, May 29, at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, passed to “that bourne from which no traveler returns.”
Mr. Foskett had been in failing health for some time, mostly due to infirmities incident to his advance age, but his death was hastened by a recent attack of bronchial pneumonia affecting his heart.
Probably no man was better know to, or enjoyed the esteem and respect of a greater number of people of this village and vicinity than the one how is gone, where practically the whole of his long life was spent, and where by persistent industry and frugality he had prospered and been able to fortify himself and family against the years when he must lay aside business cares.
The deceased was born in Leroy, Genesee county, N. Y, March 31, 1837, son of Avrill and Mary Ann Foskett. His mother died when he was but five years of age, and the following year he came to Ohio with his grandfather, who settled in Lafayette township this county. Young Foskett was raised on the farm with his grandfather's family, living with them except for one year's residence on a farm in New York, until 1860, when he began reading law with J. B. Young of Medina.
In the fall of 1861 he enlisted in a company formed in Medina county, which was, after arriving at Camp Chase, distributed throughout the 42nd O. V. I. (Garfield's regiment). He was assigned to Co. K, of which company he was elected 2d lieutenant. He was in the service nearly three years, was twice promoted, last serving as captain of Cos. I and D. In 1863 Capt. Foskett was detailed to the Provost Department at New Orleans, where he inspected the passes and passports of passengers on all water craft except war vessels that cam to that port. He was in the battles of Middle Creek, Cumberland Gap, Tazewell, Charleston, Va., Chickasaw Bluff, Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, and the other battles of the regiment.
From the army he returned to Medina, and engaged in the clothing business, under the firm name of Foskett & Saunders, who continued for three years, when he sold out and occupied a farm he had formerly bought, and lived on same for five years. In the fall of 1872 he was elected to county treasurer, and served two terms. He then engaged as salesman in the clothing house of Lewis Leon, in Cleveland, remaining with him about a year and a half, when he returned to Medina, and for some time was again in the clothing business with Al. Lewis. At the time of his death and for a number of years previous he had been a director of the Old Phoenix National Bank of Medina. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and a former commander of the local Grand Army post.
In the fall of 1865 he married Miss Nancy B. Swan, a native of Sharon township, this county, to who were born three children -- Harry S., (now dead), Burr A. of Lorain, O., and Helen R. Foskett, who resides at home with the widowed mother. These also survive two sisters, Mrs. D. A. Witter of Medina and Mrs. W. E. McKee of Mallett Creek, and one brother, M. E. Foskett, also of Mallet Creek.
Funeral services were held from the home tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Wm. J. Drew, pastor of the Congregational church, of which the deceased was long a member. Burial was made in Spring Grove cemetery. [6]

Wife’s maiden name is Swan. See marriage record.

Would suggest parents are Averill Foskett and Mary Ann Kellogg based on Death record and newspaper obituary. His mother died when he was very young and he was raised by his grandparents.
