Biography

Samuel Foster was born in 1619 in Yorkshire, He was baptized on February 2, 1619 in St. Lawrence, York, Yorkshire. His parents are unknown.[1][2]

He was married in Dedham, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, on 15 Sept 15, 1648 to Esther Kemp, daughter of Edward Kemp and Ann (Unknown) Kemp. [3][4]

The family family removed to Wenham about 1650, and again, to Chelmsford in 1655,

Chelmsford records show that Samuel and his wife Hester had at least the following children:[5]

  • Hannah, b. ca. 1648; m. Samuel Fletcher; d. 11 Dec 1697
  • Samuel, b. ca. 1650
  • Eli, b. ca. 1653
  • Edward, b. 29/30 April 1657
  • Ester, b. 1 Nov 1659
  • Andrew, b. [torn] 30, 1662; d. 20 Dec 1671
  • Abram, b. 27 Oct 1664; d. 7 Dec 1671
  • Nathaniel, b. 14 Oct 1667
  • John, b. "28 : 7 mo. : 16[71]"; d. 13 Dec 1671
  • Andrew, d. 13 Aug 1676

Samuel's Will was admitted to Probate on 14 July 1702. In it, Samuel disposed on lands, a house and farm products. Samuel mentioned:[6]

  • sons: Samuel, Eli, Nathaniel, Edward
  • "nephew Mehitobel Kemp ... upon her marriage day"
  • daughter Esther Foster
  • "dear wife"
  • witnesses: Nathan Hill, Steven Peirce, John Hill

"Samu[e]ll, Dea., July 10, 1702 [a. 83 y. G.R.1.] died at Chelmsford, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[5]

Foster-11794 and Foster-4098 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth, same death. Wife's name is just a variation. Please merge. Thanks.

Hi Melinda,

Middle names were extremely uncommon during Samuel's life. Do you have evidence that he was given or ever used the middle name Eli? In his will, Samuel mentions sons Samuel and Eli, but I have found no evidence that Samuel's middle name was Eli. I believe that it should be removed. Vic
