Biography

Nathaniel Foster immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Puritan Great Migration
Nathaniel Foster immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for Long Island

Nathaniel Foster, son of Christopher, early immigrant (age 2) to Boston with his family in 1635 on the "Abigail"

Birth & Baptism

Christened 4 May 1632 at Ewell, Surrey[1] as son of Christopher. Parish register image at findmypast.co.uk.[2]

Immigration

Christopher Foster (b. c.1603) and Frances (b. c.1610), dau. of Alice Stevens of Ewell, Surrey on the Abigail, enrolled to travel July 1635.[3][4]

Marriage & Children

A marriage record has not yet been found but per Anderson citing "Southampton History" p. 247 he had two sons Samuel and Nathaniel[3] supported by the appearance of Nathaniel "Sr" and "Jr" in town records and a deed showing Samuel Foster buying land from his father Nathaniel.

Regarding a possible spouse "Sarah Vail", a woman of that name was supposedly shown by Torrey as marrying a Nathaniel Moore but later research based on her appearance in a will seems to indicate that the marriage was recorded in error. In any case, Torrey currently shows her first and last name as unknown.[5]

Colonial Life

Nathaniel likely lived in South Hampton, New York when mentioned in his father's will dated 8 Aug 1684 as that was his father Christopher's residence and he left "my furniture and the bed I lie on" along with livestock to Nathaniel. Nathaniel's children were not mentioned by name; Christopher bequeathed to other grandchildren but mentioned none in Nathaniel's case.[3]

He appears twice in Huntington land deeds where he apparently acquired land from "Indians" on 12 Jul 1689 (an area now know as Santapogue Neck) and 2 Dec 1697. He was still alive as of 18 Sep 1694 when his son Samuel bought land from Nathaniel.[6]

Early history of Southampton, Long Island says nothing of Nathaniel other than that he resided in Huntington.[7]

Death & Estate

Nathaniel supposedly died May 1705 at Suffolk, Long Island, New York. Age: 72-73 [citation needed]

Research Notes

Needs Relationship check: son Josiah and LNAB of wife (and therefore parents attached to her as well)

Unsourced profile of Josiah Foster (1658-) is linked as a child.

Anderson, et al., commented only about two known children Profile includes, "Anderson citing "Southampton History" p. 247 he had two sons Samuel and Nathaniel." (See AmericanAncestors], by subscription.)

If there are no reliable sources to support this association, should it be severed?

Probably married in Southampton. Wife’s LNAB should be Vail.

Hi Ellen,

The wife's identity as Sarah (Vail) Foster (abt.1634-1713), has been disputed by WikiTreers since February 2021.

Anderson, et al., called Nathaniel's wife "_____ _____." (AmericanAncestors], by subscription).

If there is evidence that a woman, Sarah Vail, existed, then should that profile be severed as Nathaniel's wife? In the alternative, would we prefer to recreate he as Unknown Unknown?

Hope you might comment back so that we can devise a path forward to clearing this conflict.

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.--Gene
