Biography
Jonathan was born in 1867, the son of Joseph Foster and Hannah Johnson.[1]
In 1881 he was on the training ship Southampton at Hull. This was an "industrial school" training ship where boys were referred by the magistrates if they were orphaned, destitute, or getting into bad company. Jonathan's parents were both still alive but not living together.[2][3]
