Biography

William Foster immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

William Foster/Forster was born about 1633, the son of Reginald and Judith Foster who came to New England in 1638 and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts. [1]

William married Mary Jackson of Rowley, Masschusetts on May 25, 1661. His wife Mary was born at Rowley on February 8, 1640 [2], the daughter of William Jackson and Joanna Collin. Her father William was of Hunsley and married Joanna at Rowley, Yorkshire, England and came to New England in 1638. [3] [1]

He settled at the section of Rowley, that later became Boxford.

  • c1661: Purchased land of Joseph Jewett at Rowley. [1]
  • 1666/7: William, with his brother-in-law Francis Peabody with 2 others, received a land grant at Rowley of 800 acres. [1]
  • 1675: Served as one of the tax collectors at Rowley. [1]
  • 1677: 1680: One of the citizens chosen to 'enforce the strict observance of the Sabbath' by his neighbors. [1]
  • 1685: June 5: Boxford was incorporated and William was among those who had petitioned for the establishment of Boxford and served on the committee to settle on the 'parting line.' [1]
  • 1693: April 3: William Foster and sons William and Jonathan, and John Kimball, bought 300 acres of land on the Ipswich Road from Robert Eames. [1]
  • 1693: June 13: William was chosen as ordinary keeper and granted a license for such at Boxford. [1]
  • 1706/7: February 27: William deeded son Samuel, half his right in the 800 land grant. [1]
  • 1710: August 25: William gave his son David, of Haverhill, all the rights in lands formerly of his father-in-law William Jackson. [1]

William's father Renald Foster, in his will written on April 30, 1680, left William six acres of land and marsh at Hog Island. [4]

His wife Mary's father, William Jackson, left lands in his will to son John Sr. and grandson John Jr, but specified that if his grandson John Jr. died childless, his share should go to his daughters being Elizabeth Howe and Mary Foster, and Deborah Trumball. [1]

William died at Boxford on May 17, 1713. [5] William, aged 78, wrote his will on September 3, 1711. It was submitted to the court in June, 1713, and proved in December, 1713. In it he left bequests to: [6]

  • my wife Mary to have the estate during her widowhood
