Biography

Chillingsworth Foster was the son of Deacon James Foster and Lydia Winslow. He was born in Rochester Massachusetts on 8 December 1733.[1]

In 1753, Hannah Hammond, daughter of Barzillai Hammond had a male child on 29 November 1752, out of wedlock, and named Chillingworth Foster of Rochester to be the father.[2] Chillingworth was ordered to pay the maintenance of the child.[3]

On 5 September 1754, Chillingsworth married Margaret Pope, daughter of Elnathan Pope and Margaret (Pope) Pope, in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.[4] Over the years they raised a family of, at least, nine children.

Following Margaret's death in 1793, Chillingsworth married Sarah Freeman in Rochester sometime in August 1794.[5] No children from this union have been found.[6] On 3 March 1807, Chillingsworth passed away in Cherry Valley, New York.[1] Chillingsworth and Margaret are buried at Center Cemetery in Rochester.[7]

Research Notes

  • Birth year on the gravestone is 1735, per Frederick Clifton Pierce in his Foster Genealogy states Chillingsworth was born in 1733.[7][1] Pierce was aware of the gravestone date, but he still used the earlier date in his book. In researching this family, many birthdates in the vital records are baptism dates. Many of Chillingsworth's children had baptism dates vs. birthdates. At least two were found to be be baptized three years after birth; therefore, 1733 is used for his birth year.
  • To be researched or validated:
  1. Appointment as church Deacon date . . . church records. No valid findings. Previous and perhaps other Chillingsworth Fosters were Deacons.
  2. Military service. He was possibly a military officer with the rank of Lieutenant or higher.
  • Mentioned as Lieut. Chillingsworth Foster, who served in the later 18th and early 19th century in Mattapoisett and Old Rochester, Massachusetts : being a history of these towns and also in part of Marion and a portion of Wareham [8]
  • There is one Chillingsworth Foster from New Bedford, Massachusetts in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors on page 874 under "Forster".
  • There is one Lieutenant _____Foster in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors, but no other Chillingsworth Fosters.
