Her father was Guillaume de Fougères, seigneur de Fougères in Brittany and her mother Agatha du Hommet, daughter of Guillaume du Hommet, Constable of Normandy, by Lucy, granddaughter of Adam de Brus. [1]
Guillaume de Fougères died in 1187. [1]
They had one son Geoffroi, and one daughter, Clemence. [1]
She first married Alain de Vitre who died 1198, seigneur of Dinan[2]
Joan, daughter of King John, born about 1189, was the daughter of a "Clemence". Since Clemence de Fougères's family owned property in Mortain in Normandy, and one of John's roles was Count of Mortain, it is speculated that Clemence, prior to her marriage to Ranulph, was mother to Joan. [3]
No documentation other than circumstances of name, proximity in time and space, confirm the speculation. Sharon Penman questions why Ranulph would be interested in marrying Clemence in 1200 if Clemence by that time had an 11 year old daughter whose father was the king. [3]
She married secondly Ranulph, Knt, Earl of Chester, vicomte of Avranches in Normandy, Judge in the KIng's Court, 1193 whose first wife was Constance of Brittany who was born about 1162. Their marriage was annulled in 1199. [2]
Ranulph married before 7 October 1200 Clemence de Fougères. Her maritigium included land in the valley of Mortain. They had no issue. [2]
Clemence died in 1252. [2]
