Research Notes

Serene does not seem to be the wife of this husband or the mother of this child. I can find no evidence in sources that she ever married a Fetherolf. She does appear in William Fetherolf’s household in 1850, but William was married to Sarah at the time. The best I can tell, she became a servant for the Lutz family by the next census, and stayed with Mrs. Sophia Lutz through at least 1880.

It seems that she had an illegitimate child, but he was a boy, his name was Cary, and he was born around 1870. She had been out of Mr. Fetherolf’s household for at least 10 years before her son was born.

Her age does jump around some—her birthdate was listed as 1829 in the 1850 and 1880 censuses, and closer to 1836 in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. But because she stays with Sophia Lutz from 1860 through 1880, it still seems likely that these are all the same person.

The supposed relationship to Rosetta seems to come from Rosetta’s death certificate, which lists Henry and Scerene Faust as her parents.

If this is the same Serene, she must have given her daughter up fairly early after her birth. At which point, Rosetta would be unlikely to know who her parents were.
