Biography

Birth

John Fowler Harrop was born on 27 Sep 1903 in Pihama, Taranaki, New Zealand. His biological parents were John Henry Fowler and Emily Ada Fowler nee Morey. He was later ADOPTED aged 15. NZBDM 1918/15897 Harrop John Cecillia George. . [1] His mother died giving birth to him. She suffered from placenta praevia. Immediately after his birth he was removed by his midwife Mrs Cecillia Harrop.

His 15 year old sister Clothilda Elizabeth Fowler later married into the Harrop family.

He is possibly in the Fowler family photograph with all his siblings (attached) sitting next to his eldest sister Cecelia, John is 4-5 years old. When Clotilda was 20 yrs old, she married John Bailey Harrop. [2] He was raised by his midwife Cecilia Harrop nee Barlow and her husband George Harrop. At age 15 he was adopted, by the Harrop family who changed his surname from Fowler to Harrop keeping his original surname as his middle name.

His birth certificate on NZBDM is his post adoption one.

In 1928 John is recorded as a farmer living in Pihama. [3]

BOTH NEGLIGENT. CYCLIST AWARDED £1021. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday. Finding that both defendant and plaintiff had been negligent but that defendant's negligence was the real cause of the collision, a jury in the Supreme Court awarded, a cyclist, Tasman Banks, £1021 damages against a motorist, John Fowler Harrop. The case was the result of a collision near Hawera. Banks was riding without a light, and the lights on Harrop's car were weak. [4]

In 1940 with the outbreak of WWII he is called up for service, he is listed in the New Zealand, World War II Ballot Lists, 1940-1945 as being a Carpenter, living in Upper Manaia Rd, Kaponga c/o C W White. Charles William White had a daughter Jean. [5]

Marriage

In Jan 1941 John Henry Fowler Harrop married Jean Margaret White in Hawera, Taranaki, New Zealand.

They had 9 children together 6 sons and 3 daughters.

In 1954 John was living in Manaia Rd, Kaponga, Taranaki, New Zealand with his wife Jean, he was a Carpenter. [6]

Death

John passed away on the 13 Jun 1959 in Hawera, Taranaki, New Zealand. [7] and is buried in Pihama Cemetery. No.56. with his wife Jean the headstone reads:

'In loving memory of John Fowler beloved husband of Jean M. Harrop died 13th June 1959 aged 55 years, At Rest;
Jean Margaret beloved wife of John F. Harrop died 15th June 1967 aged 48 years. ' Reunited [8]

In the plot next to them lies John Bailey Harrop and Clotilda Elizabeth Harrop, John Fowler Harrop's biological sister and her husband, the older adoptive brother from the Harrop family who raised him.

IN FAMILY ADOPTION = Surname change to Harrop.
New Zealand Internal Affairs Historic Database of Birth's, Death's and Marriages have no record of his birth, but strangely Ancestry.com.au record the birth record is there in the New Zealand Birth Index 1840-1950 the birth wasn't registered until Oct (which is understandable given his mother's death), it was registered in Opunake, Taranaki.
