I am a retired math teacher who has always had a love and appreciation for history as well. I was first lured into family research by a puzzle in my husband's tree. The patriarch and his wife requested their letters from their church one day in 1866 and no further information about their lives from that point on was known.
Since this was a relatively (!) short time ago, I was determined to find out what happened to them. It took the establishment of the Internet and easy access to free records for me to trace their paths. Already in their sixties, they decided to leave their farm in Louisiana and move with their daughter's family to Texas. I was able to trace them with land records and census information as they moved around in Texas. I was surprised at how satisfying it was to be able to find them.
As I learned more about the family, more interesting mysteries popped up. Some I have solved and some are still brick walls, but all of it is interesting!
