Biography

Virginia Mary Fowler was born in Pennsylvania on 31 Dec 1765. She was the daughter of Edward Fowler and Rachel Piatt. She preferred to use her middle name, Mary. The family relocated to what is now northwestern West Virginia. She married Revolutionary War veteran, Hugh Steers, on 27 Oct 1790 in Ohio County, Virginia around what is now Wheeling, West Virginia. Their marriage produced nine children. The Steers family relocated to Kentucky around 1793, settling in Boon County. Their 55-year marriage ended with the death of 89-year old Hugh Steers on 12 Jan 1846. After his death, Mary lived with her son, Edward and received a widow's pension from Hugh's service in the Revolutionary War. Mary passed away at the age of 88 in Boone County on 29 Nov 1854.
