Research Notes

Note: Henry's father Thomas, and son Henry all are probably fictional creations of Christine Fowler. Henry's grandfather Sir Richard Fowler (d. 1528) owned property in Rycote, co. Oxon and Hambleden, co. Bucks, but the latter has been corrupted into Hambleton, co. Rutland by Christine Fowler in HIstory of the Fowlers, further calling into question the veracity of this pedigree.

The birth date of 1560 has been removed from the profile and the birth location Hambleton, County Rutland, England has been removed. He has been disconnected from his parents Thomas Fowler and Sarah Kevington. His relationships have been marked as uncertain.

This write up is wrong. The branch of Fowlers at Hambleton did exist. Thomas & a Skevington wife, his son Henry, and a grandson, Henry, all existed. See the visitation of Rutland.

https://archive.org/details/visitationofcoun00camd/page/47/mode/1up But, this is where reality ends and wishful thinking begins. The grandson Henry (shown alive in 1632) leaves a will in 1658 in which he names his brothers John & Roger and his sister Susannah Jackson, who also appear on this visitation. Henry seems to be unmarried with no children. His bequests go to siblings, friends & other family members etc.

(Probably also to be found on the big pay sites.)

Christine Fowler seems to have given no source/reasoning for identifying the immigrant Henry Fowler as a member of this family in her book. The book has 3 Henrys in a row (i.e. the grandson Henry had a son called Henry who was the immigrant) this is blatantly not true. There also doesn’t appear to be any evidence linking Thomas’ son, Henry, with the marriage to Annis Knight in Edlesborough, Buckinghamshire. How do we know it’s him? There is a lot wrong with this tree. The spurious wives of the son & grandson ( another Sarah Skevington!) should be removed and the immigrant Henry Fowler detached from this family, as there doesn’t appear to be any evidence of where he actually came from. The name Fowler is a prevalent one, with many different roots.
