Research Notes

  • Families of Early Guilford shows Mercy as the daughter of Thomas, and wife of John Bills.[4]
  • History of the Colony of New Haven says that Mercy Fowler, daughter of Thomas, married John Bills and settled in New London.[5]
  • Another source shows Mercy Fowler as the wife of John Bills. This source doesn't identify her parentage. The couple resided first in Groton, Connecticut where they had two children; then they lived in New London, where they had three more:[6]
  • John, baptized December 16, 1696
  • Abigail, baptized November 1, 1702; married Nathaniel House
  • James, born September 20, 1703; married Keziah French
  • Laurana, married February 1, 1726-7, David Lambert or Norwich, Connecticut
  • Benajah, married Mary _____
  • According to this source, John Betts, son of Thomas and Mary Betts, was said to have been born May 10, 1655, likely at Guilford, Connecticut. He was married twice, his first wife's name was unknown, and by her he had children John and Hanna. His second wife was Sarah (Kellogg) Brinsdale.[7]
  • Another source doesn't name John Betts' first wife either, naming children John and Hannah. It gives his birthdate as June 20, 1650, at Guilford, where he was living as of February 25, 1673. He moved to Norwalk by 1687.[8]
  • In an article published in 1938, John Betts, son of Thomas, born on June 20, 1650, was said to have married twice; the first to an unnamed wife.[9]
  • John Betts of Norwalk, was named as the guardian for his second wife, Sarah's child Samuel. John married second Sarah (Kellogg) Brinsmade. Sarah was a widow of Daniel Brinsmade. An inventory of Daniel Brinsmade's estate was made October 7, 1702. On March 18, 1708, Sarah's son, Samuel Brinsmade, named John Betts, his "father-in-law" as his guardian.[10] NOTE: This source does not identify his first wife.
