Phoebe Elizabeth Hough Fowler was born on 15 May 1810 in Horton, which is about 3 miles west of Leek, in the county of Staffordshire, England. She was daughter of John Fowler and his wife Sarah Moore[1] (whose 1st husband was John Gaunt)[2] of Horton Hall, a Jacobean manor house in the village of Horton, which her father had inherited from his father Henry Fowler.[3] (Not to be confused with another Horton Hall in another village called Horton in the county of Northamptonshire.) Phoebe was baptized on 27 Sep 1814 at St. Edward's Church in Leek, Staffordshire.[1]
1st Marriage
Phoebe married Fitzjames Watt, Esq. on 8 Dec 1836 in Leek, Staffordshire.[4] FitzJames was born on 10 March 1809 in Warrington, Lancashire, the 2nd of the 2 children of James Watt and Hannah Chorley.[5] His older brother Thomas Alexander Watt, aged 20, died in 1827, at which time Fitzjames replaced him as heir to Bell Vale in Lancaster, Lancashire and Morris Brook House in Cheshire. Fitzjames received an M.A. from Caius College, Cambridge, and was a captain in the Royal Lancashire militia.[6]
Children of 1st Marriage
Phoebe and Fitzjames were the parents of 4 sons, born at Morris Brook House in Chester in the county of Cheshire:
Henry Fowler Watt (1839-1913), married Jane Wilson Hunter[9][10]
Arthur Chorley Watt (1840-1885), married Henrietta Vary Hunter (sister of brother Henry Fowler Watt's wife Jane Wilson Hunter)[11][12]
William Watt (1842-1903), married Mary Emma Wlhelmina Smith (separated or divorced) and widow Mary Anne (Finney) Bostock[13][14]
After 12 years of marriage, Fitzjames died of tuberculosis in 1848 in Clifton, Bristol at the age of 39.[15] He was buried in Bristol General Cemetery, which is now called Arnos Vale Cemetery in Arnos Vale, Bristol. His burial record states that he was of "Morris Brook, Cheshire, but died at No. 7 York Crescent, Clifton, Bristol."[16]
There is an incorrect transcription of the source from "Bristol, England, Church of England Burials, 1813-1994," Ancestry.com, which names his burial location as Wycliffe Church, Totterdown, Gloucestershire. However, Wycliffe Church there wasn't created until 1878. Actual image shows the source is the register of the Bristol General Cemetery in Somerset, which is now (2022) called Arnos Vale Cemetery in Arnos Vale in Bristol.
2nd Marriage
After her 1st husband Fitzjames Watt died, Pheobe became "a rich widow with several children."[17] In 4 years, she married Dr. John Aitken Carlyle on 2 Nov 1852 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.[18]
John was born 7 Jul 1801 in Ecclefechan, Dunfriesshire, Scotland, the eldest son of James Carlyle and his 2nd wife Margaret Aitken.[19] He was the brother of the acclaimed Scottish essayist and historian Thomas Carlyle.
John attended medical school at the University of Edinburgh, where he received his M.D. (medical degree) in 1825. He then worked as a traveling physician, first with the Countess of Clare for seven years, then for a year with the Duke of Buccleuch. In 1849, John decided to move on from the practice of medicine. He is known for translating "Dante's Inferno" in 1845,[20] and editing his friend David Irving's "The history of Scottish poetry" in 1861.[17]
Death
Phoebe and John only had 2 years together, as Phoebe suddenly died on 26 August 1854 at Westbourne Place, Eaten-Square, London,[21] aged 44,[22] soon after giving birth prematurely to their dead 8-month-old son.[23][24] She was buried on 30 Aug 1854 in Brompton Cemetery, now in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London.[25][26]
After her death, her 2nd husband, John, lived in Edinburgh and then settled in Dumfriesshire near family. John took his commitment seriously as appointed guardian of his stepsons,[23] Thomas, Henry, Arthur and William. He died 25 years later on 15 Dec 1879 at the Hill at Dumfries in Scotland[19] and was buried with family members in Ecclefechan Churchyard in Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire.
