Little is known about James Fowler. It appears that he may have come from County Cork, Ireland, travelling from England to Sydney, Australia on the ship ‘Duchess of Northumberland’ in 1841, and then from Sydney to Melbourne, Victoria, arriving on 10th September 1842, aboard the ship ‘Dorset’. He then travelled from Melbourne to South Australia on this ship, arriving on 13th September 1842. He first settled in Coromandel Valley, SA and later in Bethany, Angaston and Craneford in the Barossa Valley, before marrying Maria Ann Garratt, in 1848, but the exact date is not known.
James was a Sawyer by trade, that means he cut down trees and sawed them into planks and boards.
