Captain Joseph Jennings "Church Jr." Fowlkes was born about 1761 in Nottoway Parish, Amelia County, Virginia.[1] Joseph is the son of Joseph Fowlkes and Mary Jane Jennings.[2] He married Frances Bass 18 June 1787 in Amelia County with consent being given by her father John, witnessed by Samuel Bruce and Armstreet Bruce, and security given by William Fowlkes.[3] After Frances' death, he married Mary "Molly" Craddock 29 September 1792 in Amelia County.[4][5]
