Biography

John was born in 1755. He is the son of Joseph Fowlkes and Mary Jane Jennings.[1]

Research Notes

A DAR record for John Fowlkes with the same dates (1755-1808) has his wife as Nancy Ward and lists a son, Austin, who married Amelia Griffin.[2]

A DAR descendant record for John Fowlkes (#A040964) shows his wife - married 18 September 1787 - as Nancy Newby, born in Farmville, Virginia and died after 19 December 1808. Their son Austin, born in Virginia on 3 April 1808 (died 1 October 1855 in Memphis) married Amelia Griffin, born in Kentucky on 19 April 1817 (died 22 June 1863 in Memphis). They married on 12 September 1833. Their daughter, Cornelia Amelia Fowlkes, born in Kentucky on 22 October 1836 (died Yazoo City, Mississippi on 25 May 1901), married Charles A McDonald on 12 April 1854. He was born in Ireland in 1824 and died at the Battle of Shiloh on 7 April 1862. Note - DAR descendant records are good for leads but are not considered to be reliable.[3]

The FamilySearch PID that this profile cited has different dates as of 7 August 2023 (c1745-1824) and is not married to a Nancy Ward and does not have a son named Austin.[1]

I think maybe Louisa & Eliza W. who married in Prince Edward County were daughters of this John.... see the FamilySearch PID for John Folks Jr (1745–1810): FamilySearch Person: GFZ4-6BB.

Their sources attached to that PID are also attached to the FamilySearch PID for John Field Fowlkes Jr (about 1745–6 February 1823): FamilySearch Person: L7FL-Y5K.

Sorry - meant to include the WikiTree profile info that seems to match up with FamilySearch Person: L7FL-Y5K - Fowlkes-108 for John Field Fowlkes (abt.1745-1824).

Fowlkes-125 and Fowlkes-236 appear to represent the same person because: Both entries appear to be for the same individual. One has parentage, the other a spouse and child.
