Fox Family in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania
CHRISTOPHER FOX.
The grandfather of Christopher Fox, of East Huntingdon township, was one of the pioneers of Westmoreland county, whither he came from east of the mountains. He was the owner of one hundred and twenty-three acres of land in Hempfield township. His children were David, mentioned hereafter: John, Jacob, Samuel, Isaac, Lizzie, who became the wife of C. Macklin; Julia Ann, married Jacob Meckling; and Hannah who died single.
David Fox, son of the pioneer ancestor, was one of the large property owners of Hempfield township, being the possessor of seven hundred acres of land, including the homestead. He was a farmer, and for sixteen years conducted a distillery. He was also engaged in the coal business and woned one-half of the Eureka coal mines at Eureka, Pennsylvania. In politics he was a strong Republican. He and his wife were members of the Lutheran church. Mr. Fox married Polly, daughter of George Houck, and their children were: Sarah, married John Wyland; Hannah married a Mr. Vanhorn; Christopher, mentioned hereafter; Mary, wife of James Clark; William, a resident of Foxtown, Westmoreland county; Edward, deceased; Catharine, married H. Painter; Alexander, died at Jeannette; Louisa, wife of Bert Hillis; Maria, wife of Josiah Miller, of Youngwood; Samuel lives in Kansas; Marion, also in Kansas; Minerva, widow of John Kline; and Israel, died young.
Christopher Fox, son of David and Polly (Houck) Fox, was born in 1832 in Hempfield township, and remained on the homestead until he had reached the age of thirty-four, when he married and settled on the farm where he has since lived. He purchased this property, which consists of two hundred acres, and on which he has erected valuable buildings. He is also the owner of two hundred acres of homestead, in Hempfield township, and in connection with his agricultural labors carries on a dairy of considerable size. Politically he is a Republican. Mr. Fox married, in 1868, Mrs. Agnes Fox, and they are the parents of two daughters: Minnie May, wife of Jesse Mathews, a carriage manufacturer of Des Moines, Iowa; and Nora Agnes, at home. He and his family are members of the Church of God.
Mrs. Fox is a daughter of Christian Stauffer, of East Huntingdon township, and was married to Isaac Fos, by whom she was the mother of two children: Sarah, at home; and Burton, who was educated at Mount Pleasant Institute, University of Rochester, and John Hopkins University, after whcih he was for six years an instructor in Wheaton College. He was then principal for one year of the Scottdale schools, and since then has conducted a dairy farm at Foxtown. After the death of her husband Mrs. Fox became the wife of Christopher Fox, as mentioned above.
