Sarah Gallagher Fox was born in the parish of Muiravonside on 12 March 1885 and was the youngest daughter of John Fox and Sarah Gallagher. [1]
Sarah was raised on East Bridge St with her siblings, however her father died in 1886 and her mother married her second husband, Andrew Gilmour Callander, and had three more children. Sarah is listed with the Callander surname on the 1891 census and under the surname Fox on the 1901.[2][3]
Sarah gave birth to an illegitimate baby girl, Sarah Gallagher Fox, on 11 February 1904, however the child died of pneumonia a few weeks later.[4][5]
Sarah married William Sutherland, however they appear to have had no children.
William was killed in an accident near Kilwinning, Ayrshire, in 1913. An article in the Falkirk Herald from 19 April 1913 describes how Sarah brought an action against William's employers, Carnival, a theatrical proprietor from Glasgow, for compensation after her husband was killed under the wheels of a caravan he was helping to move. The employer admitted responsibility for the accident, however they claimed Sarah was not William's dependent as they had been separated at the time of the accident. The judge at Ayr Sheriff Court ruled Sarah had only been partially dependent on her husband and awarded her £39.[6]
Sarah Gallagher Fox died of tuberculosis, aged 50 years, on 2 December 1935. The death was reported by Andrew Kay, an intimate friend, who was living with her.[7]
