William was born about 1871. William's birth was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1871 in the Dewsbury district.[1] He was the son of Joseph Fox and Martha (Reynolds) Fox.
1881 census: Grosvenor Road, Batley, Yorkshire. William 9, was the son of Joseph Fox 38, Woollen Manufacturer. Mother Martha is not in the household at this time. He had a brother Arthur 11, a sister Rachel 13, and a cousin Letitia Burnley 14, all born in Batley. Domestic Servant Martha Trevarroe 19, and a Visitor Alice Trevarroe 17, Woollen Cloth Weaver, both from St Ives in Cornwall. [2]
1891 census: Bridge House, Grosvenor Road, Batley, Yorkshire. William's mother died about 1889 and his father remarried in 1891 to Mary Jane Reynolds. William 19, single, Assistant Woollen Manufacturer. Father Joseph 48, Woollen Manufacturer and step mother Mary J 43. Siblings, Rachel A Fox, 23, Arthur Fox 21, Norman J Fox 17, and Marian Fox 6. Servants, Mary A Tyrell 35 and Sarah A Lockwood 14. [3]
1901 census: 79 Warwick Road, Batley, Yorkshire, England. William 29, single, Woollen Mill manager. Father Joseph J Fox 58, Commission Agent, (Worsted & Cotton), and step mother Mary 53. Siblings, Rachel 33, single, Norman J 27, single, Commission Agent, (Worsted & C), and Marian 16, single, School Teacher. Cousin, Eleanor M Baker 28, single.[4]
Marriage: William's marriage was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1903 in the Leeds district.[5]
1911 census 36, Warwick Road, Batley, Yorkshire. William Henry Reynolds Fox 39, Woollen Manufacturer, and his wife Mabel 34. They had a daughter Margaret Irene 6. They have recorded that they have been married 8 years, had 2 children and one died before 1911. They had another daughter Hilda Mary in 1906 who died in 1907. Also in the household is a nephew John Cuthbert Radcliffe age 6. He is the son of Mabel's brother John Vernon Radcliffe and his wife Gertrude who live in Salford Lancashire. [6]
1939 register: 4, Park Avenue Rutland Road, Batley, Yorkshire. William 68, Woollen Manufacturer, Retired and his wife Mabel 63, Unpaid Domestic Duties. Daughters, Margaret Fox 35, single, Unpaid Domestic Duties, and Free Lance Literary Work, and Barbara Fox 25, single, Shorthand Typist. Also both daughter were in the Womens Voluntary Service, Control Centre, in their spare time. [7]
William's death (age 80) was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1951 in the Spen Valley district.[8]
