  • Trove website. Wagga Wagga Advertiser (NSW : 1875 - 1910). Tue 12 May 1896, Page 3, Tumbarumba. "During last week Hannah Hoenig (widow of the late William Hoenig, who was drowned some time ago in the Manus Creek) was brought into town in an exhausted state, and taken to the Globe Hotel, where she was carefully nursed and attended to by Dr. Johnstone, who at the outset stated that the woman could not survive. She lingered till Saturday night, when death relieved her of this world's misery. Strange to relate the deceased lived in a lonely hut on the Manus Creek, and never interfered or had intercourse with neighbors or relatives, although a brother-in-law lived only a short distance from her abode. When removed from her lonely hut, and some of her effects were gathered up, money, in gold and notes to the amount of between £170 and £180, Was found in various parts of the hut, and given to the police for safe keeping. Two days before her death deceased made a will bequeathing part of her property to a well-to-do brother in New Zealand, and the remainder to a relative in England. Deceased was 66 years of age." https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/101776610
  • Trove website. Singleton Argus (NSW : 1880 - 1954). Wed 3 Jun 1896, Page 1, GENERAL GLEANINGS. "... One of those peculiarities of humanity, a miser, was discovered at Manus last week. An old resident of that place, a Mrs W. Haenig, was found in her hut in a low state of health, her surroundings suggesting poverty and want. She was removed into Tumberumba for medical attendance, but died on Friday last, and was buried on Saturday without a single mourner following. An inspection of the old lady's premises revealed the presence of a couple of hundred pounds stowed away in different places therein. Some two years ago, or more, the deceased's husband was found drowned in a waterhole at Manue [Manus]. The body was taken out of the water, and the interment wasn't exactly that a hole was dug alongside of the body to admit of its being rolled into the grave with a handspike, though the process of burying was very near it. Had the widow only mentioned that a few hundred pounds were "banked " in their house the old man might have received a decent burial. Anyhow, the remains would probably have been placed where warlike station bullocks couldn't paw up the little mound that marked his last resting place." https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/83245979
