Elizabeth is the eldest child of John Fradd and Jane Williams. She was named after her paternal grandmother and baptised on 10 May 1831 at St Mawgan in Pydar[1].
Elizabeth grew up with a half sister, Philippa, who was about six years her senior, and two younger sisters, Susan and Mary. Susan died when Elizabeth was about ten years old, and Mary when Elizabeth was about 13 years old. Elizabeth also had two younger brothers, William and John. The family home was also shared by her maternal grandmother, Mary Williams, and occasionally by boys who were apprenticed to Elizabeth's father, John, who was a carpenter.
At seventeen years of age Elizabeth married Thomas Henry Broad, a wheelwright, at St Mawgan in Pydar on 5th August 1848. The couple signed their names. John Fradd and Francis Fradd, likely Elizabeth's father and uncle, respectively, were witnesses[2].
Elizabeth and Henry's first child, Margaret Jane, arrived soon after the marriage, and was named after both of her grandmothers. She was closely followed by Nicholas, named after Henry's father. By 1851 the young family lived with Elizabeth's parents and Henry worked as a carpenter with his father-in-law.
