Biography

James was born in 1729. [1]

His parents are conjectural.

Emma Eliza Laughlin's notes (1930s) on the Robes and Frames says that "Irish Jimmie's" father died of ship fever while on a visit and is buried in Pennsylvania. The father apparently had three brothers (? or were these uncles on Jimmy's mother's side?) who came with "Irish Jimmie" when they emigrated around 1750. One uncle settled in New York State, one in Pennsylvania, one in New Jersey.

Other stories about James's origins and parents.

There is very little information on William Frame and Isabel Crawford. They were probably born in Ireland and married there. William died in 1755 and Isabel in 1760, places unknown. It is not known whether they immigrated to America. They had six children:

  • 1. John, born 1721.
  • 2. Unknown child, born 1723.
  • 3. Janet, born 1728.
  • 4. James, born 1729 in County Armagh, Ireland, died May 22, 1794 in Fayette

County, PA; married about 1752 to Susannah Downard. 7 children. (See below)

  • 5. William, born 1734.
  • 6. David, date of birth unknown. [2]

"Irish Jimmie" resided 1790 Census, Luzerne Township, Fayette, PA: page 40: 5 males 0 2 [3]

Buried in Dunlap's Creek Presbyterian Church, Merrittstown, Fayette, Pennsylvania. In Feb 1785, he was granted 384 acres in Fayette co., PA, where he spent the rest of his life. He died without distributing the land among his heirs, and on 29 Dec 1795, six of his children sold their shares to the seventh (James Jr.) and the relevant deed provides contemporary proof of the parentage of his children.[4]

Research Notes

Sarchet's History of Guernsey County, Ohio [5]mentions the ancestor of the Frame family as being a certain George Frame, a victim of religious persecution in Ireland. It is said that all members of his family were killed except himself and two children. An account written in the handwriting of Roland St. Clair Frame (1844-1934) of Guernsey county, OH gives a similar story, adding that the maiden name of George Frame's wife was Thompson.

QUOTE FROM Stewart Baldwin descendancy: James Frame came to America about 1750. He married Susannah Downard, who was said to have been born in England. They moved from Chester co., PA to Fayette, co., PA where the names of James and Susanna Fraim appear in the session book of the Presbyterian Church at Dunlap's Creek.[6]

Guernsey county tradition[7] is fairly consistent. One version states that three brothers and a nephew came across the Atlantic from county Armagh, Ireland, settling in the vicinity of Philadelphia. The nephew was our James Frame. The reunion book kept by John Shannon Frame, a great grandson of James Frame the immigrant has a few differences; The place of origin is Scotland, date of arrival 1750, with James Frame being 21. Two uncles are in Philadelphia and one in New York State. It also adds that James Frame's father died while on a visit to America and was buried in PA, and that his brother and sister also later came to Philadelphia, the sister marrying a Buchannon. [End of Stewart Baldwin quote.]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share DNA with James:
