Inscription on Enoch Francis Tombstone In memory of ENOCH FRANCIS who was born Jan the 6th, 1766 and married to Ann Dulin September 20, 1798 and baptized May 13th, 1827. He departed this life June 27, 1839 age 73 years 5 mos 21 days. “I’d leap at once my seventy years and I’d rush into his arms and loose my breath and all my cares amid those heavenly charms.”
They are buried at North Fork, Virginia cemetery. They lived at “Windy Hill”, which was built circa 1800, on a plantation of over 800 acres at Mountville Virginia.
Windy Hill still stands at 37247 Mountville Road, Middleburg, Virginia 20117; there have been substantial expansions to the original home, which in 2005 was owned C. Okey Turner.
In Enoch Francis estate there were listed the following named slaves at the values shown: Levi Age 42 $400.00 Phillip Age 34 $600.00 Harriet Age 21 $500.00 Cynthia and Child Mary Jane Age 30 $500.00 Sandy Age 8 $300.00 Daniel Age 5 $200.00 Presley Age 4 $150.00
ENOCH FRANCIS January 6, 1766 - June 27, 1839
Baptized May 13, 1827. Married Ann Dulin September 20, 1798. She was born sometime in 1779. Thought to have come from Scotland. Died August 5, 1847. Buried at the Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery North Fork, Virginia. Enoch is also buried in the Baptist Church Cemetery near North Fork, Virginia. His will, filed of record in the probate court of Loudoun County, Virginia, November 7, 1839. Thomas Francis was named administrator of estate, and was thought to be his brother (Story is that Enoch and his brother Thomas came to this country from Wales.) Thomas was a brave soldier in the Revolutionary War and was buried with Military honors at North Fork, Virginia in 1846.(Charles I Francis (ggrandson) thinks that the administrator Thomas Francis was actually the son of Enoch Francis)
The County records of Loudoun County, Virginia shows that Enoch was authorized to build a toll bridge over Goose Creek, December 26, 1795. His probate shows a large estate including several slaves and a part of the realty, is now (1960) the Middleburg Fox Hunt Club near Foxcroft, Virginia. The estate was called "Windy Hill" It was noted that the house was said to have had cherry wood floors.
The property on the map showing J Francis ownership was once part of Enoch’s landholdings. He owned a mill on Beaverdam Creek where the Aldie-Snickersville Turnpike crosses same as wll as several other Mills in the County and rather vast landholdings. Enoch died in 1839 and the estate was divided among his heirs.
